I'm often asked how I got started doing product photography. The truth is that it was completely by accident...

I took my first black and white photography class way back in high school and have been in love with it ever since. Even back then I knew it would be a life long hobby but figured the only way I could ever make a career out of it would be by shooting portraits or weddings. Neither of which I could see myself doing. So, photography remained a hobby.

A number of years later, after being laid-off during a corporate merger and downsizing, I came to the sudden realization that I never wanted to work for anyone else again. Can anyone relate? ;)

Around the time I was laid-off the internet was getting huge! Computers were affordable and high speed internet was becoming more widely available. Everyone had a brilliant idea for a web-based service or product they wanted to sell so I decided to try my hand at designing websites. I had fun with it for a couple years and made a good living but it quickly became extremely competitive and slowly began losing it's appeal to me.

One day in early 2001 I was quoting a client on a new website and they asked me about product photography. Did I know of anyone that specialized in product shots, what would it cost...I had no clue! I told the client I'd look into it for him. A week later and after hours of scouring the internet I could not find an affordable photographer that could produce halfway descent photo.. So, I decided to try it myself.

I went out and bought my first "good" digital camera (now obsolete), a backdrop and some lights and ExpressDigitalPhoto.com was born! I quickly became overwhelmed with orders from all over the country and the rest is history!

I guess I was never thrilled with the name Express Digital Photo. It was too long and generic and we were often confused with a company called Express Digital (who is also in the photographic industry).

I got an itch one day in 2003 and began thinking of ways to reinvent the company. As do many businesses just getting started online, the first place I went was to my favorite domain registrar to search for the perfect domain name. I figured everything would fall into place once I found it.

After a number of days searching and putting various words and phrases together I nearly gave up. In my moment of temporary defeat, I looked down at my illegible, chicken-scratch filled notepad and all of a sudden two very simple words popped out at me. Product Image! That's it! It was the perfect play on words. To my amazement, the domain was available. That was almost 4 years ago...

Thousands of photos, three plus years, two darling little girls and one move halfway across the country later, our reinvention is complete. Not only have we changed our company name but we have also completely redesigned our website, expanded our sample galleries and added some great features that our customers were asking for, such as online proofing.
